Synopsis:

The night begins like any other night on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into a nearby planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

A timeless love story, THESE BROKEN STARS sets into motion a sweeping science fiction series of companion novels. The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.

My Review:

These Broken Stars was one of those books that you read and then as soon as you get done with it you search for another book like it. After reading Alienated I have been a huge sci-fi kick and These Broken Stars was the perfect book for me to pick up! Now sci-fi and aliens are two different things, so if you thought reading this book you would you encounter some hot aliens, you’re wrong. But, this book does have a totally swoon worthy human character named Tarver.

Now although Tarver may not be the richest person in the universe he is very well known as an accomplished war hero. The book did have dual points of view and I really loved reading from Tarver’s pov because he was such an interesting character. In the beginning of the book he would think through all of his decisions very strategically, he would never do anything that didn’t have a purpose. But over the course of the book his hard exterior begins to melt, and he begins to think with his heart as well.

The other point of view is this book is from Lilac. She is the daughter of the richest man in the universe… literally. Her dad became extremely wealthy for building the technology that allows humans to travel through space and colonize various planets. When you first meet Lilac she was honestly a spoiled brat, and I honestly did not like her very much.  But as the story progresses she drops the act and develops into such a strong character.

The story begins with the crash of the space ship they were traveling on and the death of over 50,000 people. Being the only survivors of the devastating crash, Tarver and Lilac begin to explore this forgein planet that they are stranded on. But it is different than anything they’ve ever seen. This plot was so interesting and well played out that I was never bored. After every chapter in the novel you have a page where you see Tarver getting questioned. And there’s this mystery of what happened? Why is he being questioned? What did he do? And who is questioning him? These questions are always in the back of your mind pushing you to keep reading.

Something I have to applaud these authors for is the romance in this story. It was well paced and beautifully written. There were parts while I was reading this that literally had me “awhhh”ing. Everything about this story was so real and I felt as though I was there with the characters experiencing it! The only negative thing that I have to say about this book is the fact that the second book trilogy features two new star-crossed lovers. Now I’m not saying that because I feel like this book didn’t come to a fulfilling conclusion, because it did. I just want to read more about Lilac and Tarver because I love them both so much!

I rated this book 5/5 stars and I would recommend it to fellow sci-fi lovers and young adult readers. So go and get your copy today! And look for the second book in the trilogy, This Shattered World, in stores December 23rd 2014!
