Doon by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon Spoiler Free Review!

Veronica doesn’t think she’s going crazy. But why can’t anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.

But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.

Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna’s great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica’s daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, with permission from the ALan Jay Lerner Estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation. Follow the journey at

~Destiny awaits!

Since Doon is a modern retelling of the play Brigadoon, I was a little weary going into it. I have read some good fairytale retellings but I’ve also read quite a few… not so good ones. But I did decided that I wanted to give this genre another shot and I’m so thankful I did! Doon completely surpassed any expectations I had for it and raised the bar for any books similar to it that I will read in the future.

Doon is told from the point of view of two young ladies, Veronica and Mackenna, who have the opportunity to visit Alloway, Scotland for an entire summer. While there, they visit the Brig o’ Doon where they are then transported into a magical, too-good-to-be-true kingdom known as Doon. In this story they not only go on the adventure of a lifetime but also meet some very swoon worthy princes.

After reading this novel I really want to plan I trip to Scotland! Corp and Langdon proved to be excellent world builders through which I could picture this magnificent kingdom perfectly in my head! The descriptions of the world were just enough so that I could create a clear picture but not too much that I felt like I couldn’t use my imagination to add the little details.

One of my favorite aspects of this story was the voice. I completely felt like I was reading from two teenager’s eyes instead of the adult women who wrote it. I feel like in some stories that are told from the point of view of two best friends the characters can become annoying quickly and it just doesn’t do anything good for the story. However, I did think the authors were very smart about the way this book was written, as that was not the case. That being said, although I did like Mackenna’s voice in the story, I would have preferred to read the book solely from Veronica’s point of view. Not because I didn’t like Mackenna, but just because I felt that Veronica was more of the main character in this story and I felt that as I was reading Kenna’s side of the story I was missing out on important things from Vee.

I also had I bit of the problem with the romance in the book in the beginning. In this world they have things called ‘Callings’, and if you are lucky enough to have a Calling, you have dreams or visions of your soul mate. Very early on Veronica experience a Calling so when she first met the man of her dreams (literally), she was already head over heels for him. Now I’m the type of person that likes to read the build up to the relationship. That way it just feels more real to me instead of, “Hi. Nice to meet you… I love you.” But as I continued reading there was more of a build up throughout the novel and I gained a greater understand of a Calling so was able to make my peace with their relationship. Well… more than make my peace. I SHIP VEE AND JAMIE SO HARD!

Now do not be fooled by this book you action lovers. There is plenty of high intensity, action scenes in here for you, especially during the climax of the book (HOLY CRAP!).

There is also a bit of a mystery! When I started this book I thought I knew exactly what I was reading and could predict clear into the future. But as obvious as the future may have seemed, I was hardly ever right! Corp and Langdon really did an excellent job layering information to constantly keep you alert and guessing. There were quite a few plot twists in this book that completely blindsided me!

Overall I was very, very happy with this novel and I look forward to seeing where this series in going! If you have not picked this book up yet, I highly recommend it to all you fantasy and romance lovers out there! You should be able to find this book at your local Barnes & Noble but it can also be ordered from most online retailers like Amazon and Book Depository! Also, be sure to look for the second book, Destined for Doon, in stores September 2nd! I give this book 5/5 stars!

Blue by Kasey Jackson Spoiler Free Review!

A thriving black market—fueled by healers convinced of their supernatural medicinal properties—created an uncontrollable demand for the most grisly commodity to obtain—

the body parts of the colorless people.

After the murder and maiming of countless people afflicted with Albinism, the South African government realized that they had to intervene. Out of the desire to protect even the poorest of the afflicted people, the Humane Harvest Compounds were established.

Fifteen years later, in a rapidly changing post-Apartheid nation, Anytha and Tabitha—two young women living completely different lives—are found questioning the motives of those in power, setting their minds to look beyond their spotless reputations, good deeds, and popularity—unaware that what they discover may make them question what they believe about life itself.

My Review:

Originally going into this book, I was worried that it would be very text-book like. But I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised right from the beginning. It was nothing like the impression I got while reading the first little bit of the book, about The Regulations of Humane Harvest Act. Going into this book I was a little apprehensive of it considering the premise of this book, but as I read more I grew to realize it was very similar to previous books I had read and loved.

Dumbledore’s Army Reunites at Quidditch World Cup Final

By the Daily Prophet’s Gossip Correspondent, Rita Skeeter

There are celebrities – and then there are celebrities. We’ve seen many a famous face from the wizarding world grace the stands here in the Patagonian Desert – Ministers and Presidents, Celestina Warbeck, controversial American wizarding band The Bent-Winged Snitches – all have caused flurries of excitement, with crowd members scrambling for autographs and even casting Bridging Charms to reach the VIP boxes over the heads of the crowd.

But when word swept the campsite and stadium that a certain gang of infamous wizards (no longer the fresh-faced teenagers they were in their heyday, but nevertheless recognisable) had arrived for the final, excitement was beyond anything yet seen. As the crowd stampeded, tents were flattened and small children mown down. Fans from all corners of the globe stormed towards the area where members of Dumbledore’s Army were rumoured to have been sighted, desperate above all else for a glimpse of the man they still call the Chosen One.
